Dough for It

Dough For It!™ is a special ice cream flavor from Cold Stone Creamery that they always have on their menu. It starts with their Classic Cookie Dough Ice Cream. Then, a worker adds three extra items by hand on a very cold stone slab kept at about 16°F. These extras are Chocolate Chips, pieces of Cookie Dough, and Sugar Crystals. They make this special mix when you order it. A worker takes a scoop of the base ice cream and puts it on the cold stone, adds the extra items on top, and then uses a metal spatula to chop and mix everything together until it’s spread out evenly.

The Classic Cookie Dough Ice Cream itself has a strong taste. It’s not plain like their Sweet Cream flavor, which is mild so the added flavors stand out. This ice cream already tastes like brown sugar and vanilla, just like uncooked cookie dough, even before anything is mixed in. Because they mix it on the cold stone, the cookie dough pieces and chocolate chips stay in chunks instead of getting crushed smooth. So, each spoonful might have a different mix of flavors and pieces. That’s how it’s meant to be, not a problem.

Dough For It!™ is a vegetarian option and you can get it any time of the year in three sizes. The Like It® size is about 5 ounces, Love It® is about 8 ounces, and Gotta Have It® is about 12 ounces. The calories for these sizes range from 630 to 1,230. You can also make it your own by adding or swapping in any other Cold Stone extra items for an extra cost. It’s a great choice for dessert after dinner, on a nice warm day, or for a birthday party.

Cold Stone’s waffle cones and bowls are made fresh right in the store at most locations. They use a special batter and cook it in a waffle iron. This is different from other chains that use cones from a package. When they are freshly made, the cones come out warm and soft before they cool down and become crispy. For the Dough For It!™ ice cream, this warm, slightly sweet taste of the cone is a direct contrast to the very cold ice cream. The warmth melts the ice cream just a little where they touch, and the cone itself gives a crunchy texture. This is something you just can’t get from a paper cup.

Taste Profile and Texture

Dough For It!™ is all about one main taste: chocolate chip cookie dough. Everything in it, from the ice cream base to the cookie dough pieces and chocolate chips, adds to this same flavor. It doesn’t mix in other contrasting tastes. This makes it a choice that feels familiar and consistent, not complicated.

  • Brown sugar and vanilla. The ice cream base tastes like butter and caramel-like sweetness from brown sugar and vanilla. Right from the start, it feels like a dessert.
  • Semi-sweet chocolate. The chocolate chips add a short, mild bitter taste from the cocoa. This breaks up the sweetness a bit but doesn’t change the main cookie dough flavor.
  • Raw dough taste. The pieces of cookie dough make the base flavor even stronger. They add a thicker, slightly salty-sweet taste.
  • Sugar crystals. These give you small bursts of extra sweetness and a little bit of crunch, especially when they are grouped together.

Allergens

The following allergens are present in Dough For It!™ as prepared in its standard configuration:

  • Milk/Dairy: present in the Classic Cookie Dough Ice Cream base (cream, skim milk)
  • Wheat/Gluten: present in the ice cream base (cookie dough pieces contain enriched flour), Cookie Dough mix-in, and Waffle Bowl or Waffle Cone if selected

This item does not contain tree nuts or peanuts in its standard configuration. Cold Stone Creamery prepares all items on shared cold stone surfaces and in shared environments where cross-contact with milk, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, eggs, and soy is possible. Individuals with severe or life-threatening allergies should inform staff before ordering and review full allergen documentation at coldstonecreamery.com.

How to Recreate Dough For It!™ At Home

Ingredients (1 serving)

Base:

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp heat-treated all-purpose flour (see notes)
  • Pinch of fine sea salt

Mix-Ins:

  • 3 tbsp semi-sweet chocolate chips (Ghirardelli® recommended)
  • 3 tbsp edible cookie dough pieces, chilled (Nestlé Toll House® edible dough or homemade)
  • 1 tsp sanding sugar or sugar crystals

Vessel (optional): 1 waffle bowl or waffle cone

  • Make the base. Whisk together cream, milk, both sugars, vanilla, salt, and heat-treated flour until the sugars fully dissolve. Chill for at least 2 hours.
  • Churn. Process in an ice cream machine until soft-serve consistency, about 20 to 25 minutes.
  • Freeze your surface. Place a marble slab or small baking sheet in the freezer for at least 1 hour.
  • Fold the mix-ins. Transfer ¾ cup of the churned ice cream onto the frozen surface. Add all mix-ins on top. Using a bench scraper, chop and fold (do not stir) 6 to 8 times until distributed. The ice cream should stay dense and scoopable throughout.
  • Texture check. It should feel like thick gelato, soft enough to fold and firm enough to hold shape. If it softens too much, return to the freezer for 5 minutes.
  • Serve in a waffle bowl, cone, or cup immediately.
  • Heat-treating flour. Bake on a sheet at 350°F for 5 minutes or microwave in 15-second bursts until it reaches 165°F internally. Cool before using.
  • No-churn option. Fold the base ingredients into 1 cup of whipped heavy cream with ½ cup sweetened condensed milk. Freeze in a loaf pan for 4 to 6 hours. The texture will be lighter and more airy than the original.
  • Storage. Press plastic wrap directly against the surface before covering. Best consumed within 1 to 2 hours as home-frozen ice cream develops ice crystals quickly without commercial stabilizers.

When to Get It and How to Order It

  • Best time to have it. It’s great as a dessert after dinner on a warm day, as a special treat for someone who loves cookie dough on their birthday, or just for yourself after a long day.
  • What goes well with it. It’s perfect after a meal of savory food. Your taste buds will be ready for something sweet, and its simple, straightforward flavor will taste just right, not too much.
  • Best container to choose. Pick a Waffle Bowl if you’re getting a Love It® or Gotta Have It® size. Choose a cup if you want to taste only the ice cream without any flavor from a baked cone.
  • Best time to go. Try to get there about 10 to 15 minutes before the evening gets busy. That way, the cold stone will be freshly chilled, and the worker can take their time mixing everything in evenly.
  • How to ask for it. If you want the cookie dough pieces spread out everywhere instead of all sinking to the bottom, just ask them to “give it extra folds.”

Helpful Tips

  • If you are worried about allergies from other foods touching the stone, you can ask them to use a freshly cleaned stone surface. The workers are trained to do this for you.
  • If you get a waffle cone, eat it from the top down and turn the cone as you take bites. This helps stop it from dripping.
  • Cold Stone ice cream doesn’t freeze back to its original creamy texture, so it’s best to eat it right away.
